Happy May Day everyone! We are working backwards on the calendar. We had June last week with temps in the 70s and to celebrate May's arrival, we have snow flurries. Nevertheless, the winter is over. Mount Snow shut down the lifts this past Sunday and the boards and skis (if not the jackets) are put away until December. It was a great season but now our attention has turned to the Garden. We put a lot of new perenniels in the Wedding Garden last fall and they seem to have done well. Most of the peonies are pushing up and we will have a long display this year. June brides will enjoy their fragrance and beauty and some will linger into July. Lupines are everywhere and will start to blossom by month's end followed by the Iris and the Poppies. Each year we add another 200 daffodil bulbs to the meadow across the road and that is beginning to pay off as well. It is a slightly different and more rewarding version of investing than when I was involved in the markets:-) We enjoyed the Yoga group that was here during the warm spell and they enjoyed sunning on the deck. Some even went over to the mountain for a few end of the season runs but sunning on the deck was the better choice. With the groups and the weddings these days we get to practice difference dietary configurations. It seems that almost all wedding include some vegetarians, or some vegans. Sometimes its just no red meat and sometimes its all red meat! No gluten? No problem. No nuts, no mushrooms...the only thing we draw the line at is flavor. It has to taste good! And it does! This is the quietest time of the year in Vermont. After the snow and before the summer. It also happens in the fall after the leaves are down but before the snow comes. If you can arrange it however, this is a wonderful time to visit. Here in Southern Vermont the season varies with the altitude. It already seems like summer in Brattleboro down on the Connecticut River with the leaves all out and many flowers in bloom. Up here at 2300 feet the crocuses are fading but the other early spring flowers are just getting going. Each day the green in the woods becomes more pronounced and there is something new to admire. This is also a great time to catch a trout! Speaking of Brattleboro, don't miss the forth annual Strolling of the Heifers the first weekend in June. Yeah, its corny, but we are rural after all. While you are there check out the new Grafton Cheese factory on Route 30. The Farmers Market opens in two weeks.
